There is great beauty in the illustration of the Great Shepherd as He tends, cares and provides for His sheep. His ways far exceed our ways as far as a man would exceed that of an animal yet a closer examination of the text reveals a deeper relationship. ‘Jehovah is my companion (or deepest friend) therefore I am not diminished’ demonstrates that the Great Shepherd is one with His sheep, His people, His Bride, and they cannot be diminished because He is eternal. Jesus told His disciples this when He said he was not ashamed to call them brethren. The child of grace stands as an heir of God and a joint heir with Christ because He is Her beloved and His desire is upon Her. David and Jonathan were set forth as a type having their souls knit together as one. David is the beloved and Jonathan is the gift. Therefore all that their Father has given the Son He has lost nothing therefore they are not diminished.
The Psalm ends with goodness and mercy follow the redeemed all the days of this life and I shall sit and rest in the house of the Lord forever. This can in no way be referring to a temple built of the sand and stone of this earth for the glory of the temple of Solomon far exceeded the glory of the temples built by Ezra or Herod and should there be a fourth temple built on the seven hills of Judea the glory of the Lord shall never surpass the time when He descended from above and set His name in that place. But the prophet said that the glory of the second temple would far exceed the glory of the first so much so that it would be as if the first had no glory. This temple, this building not made with hands is the temple that Christ told the Pharisees that when they tore it down He would build it again in three days. He did not speak of anything that man could build or would build but He spake of His body in which all the members are fitly framed together growing up unto the holy habitation of God. This is His church and His Bride and She cannot be diminished for the gates of Hell cannot prevail against Her.
Rejoice ye saints of hope. For we know that when the tabernacle of this dwelling is dissolved we have an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens which shall never be diminished because Jehovah is our companion.
Your servant in Christ,
