IF grace could reach the dying thief,
And persecuting Saul,
Could give to Magdalene relief,
And freely pardon all:

May not a sinner, such as I,
O thou forgiving God,
Who justly do deserve to die,
Find pardon in thy blood?

Before thy throne of grace, oh God,
Upon my bonded knee,
I humbly pray this guilty load
May be removed from me.

The joy on earth, and joy in heaven,
Would be increased thereby;
“The lost is found – his sins forgiven,”
Would echo thro’ the sky.
