Dear Sir. As the church was chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world, and on account of the everlasting covenant cannot ever be out of Christ, how did she fall in Adam as the theologians tell us, since she was never in Adam? That she was once generate and needs regeneration is scripture truth but how did she become unregenerate? I live in ___________ but cannot ask anyone here as all are tainted to a greater or lesser degree with Fullerism, (a doctrine I do not trust). I ask your opinion because from what I have read in “A Sweet Savour,” I feel that God's honour will be uppermost in your mind if you feel disposed to answer my query.
Thank you for the question. I understand not being able to go to someone local. We also live in a very dry area spiritually. Oh, yes there are tons of buildings that have groups of people meeting in them that call themselves Christians. But they have been given to believe something that I don’t agree with and don’t feel that it is the truth of the gospel. They serve a man-made god whom they think they can control. They have to give him permission to save them by asking him to come into their life. They have made the blood of Christ a mockery because in their eyes it is not enough in the fact that it is efficient for all of mankind but only effectual for those that choose him. They have to go out and win souls for him because he is incapable of doing it himself. They have to go to college in order to learn how to interpret what scripture says because they obviously don’t trust the Holy Spirit.
You are correct in your assessment that the bride could not have fallen in Adam because she was never in Adam. Modern theologians think and say a lot of things that can’t be backed up from Scripture and yet people eat it up like it was the best thing ever.
If I be a child of grace and if you be a child of grace then we were made partakers of flesh and blood when we came into being here in time but we have been children from all eternity. The writer of Hebrews puts it this way: “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;” (2:14) Notice that it says that they were children before they became partakers of flesh and blood which agrees with your comment about the church being chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world. This points us to the wonderful truth of the Eternal Vital Unity of Christ to His church.
The human race died in Adam when he sinned in the garden and ate of the tree of knowledge. I still struggle with the term “Adam fell” in the garden because it is not in Scripture and Adam did exactly what he was created to do. When God was instructing Adam not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil He also very plainly stated that “in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” (Genesis 2:17) There were no “if’s” “and’s” or “but’s” about it, the Lord had complete control over the matter and NOTHING was left up to chance.
I don’t know how you view “regeneration”, but I don’t view it as equal or synonymous with being “born again” or “born from above” or being “quickened”. I see Scripture portraying it as something completely different. It is only mentioned in the Scriptures twice.
Matt 19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; (emphasis added – Tom)
In the verse in Matthew, the definite article “the” is used before the word “regeneration”. To me this points to something specific. Also the word is a noun and not a verb. It does not show action but is a person, place or thing. I believe that it points to a single time and single event when Christ was raised from the dead. It was at that time when He sat in the throne of his glory and all those that were in Him followed Him in the regeneration and they were raised along with Him. That is why Paul can say in his letter to the brethren in Ephesus. “And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” (2:6) The children that were raised with Christ are already seated in the heavenlies and if we are children of grace then we are there also.
The verse in Titus does not have the definite article before the word “regeneration” but it is still a noun and therefore does not show action. The word “washing” here means bath or baptism. Which goes right along with what Jesus said in the book of Luke: “But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!” (12:50; also see, Matt. 20:22; and Mark 10:38)
Both these verses (Matt. 19:28 & Titus 3:5) point to a certain event and I believe that they are referring to the same event. The verse in Matthew has a future tense to it but the verse in Titus is stating a fact that it is complete.
